Overhead SF6 Switches

G&W offers a variety of different overhead switches for 15.5 through 38 kV overhead systems. Switches are available for either direct pole or crossarm mounting, and can be operated either manually or through various remote control, SCADA or automatic transfer control packages. Various styles are available depending upon system rating requirements.

Load break with 20kA asymmetrical momentary
Rotary Puffer style load break switches.

Load break with 40kA asymmetrical momentary
Linear Puffer style load break switches.

G&W's Solution Advantage
Maximum operator safety — G&W overhead switches are designed with all critical contact components totally protected from the environment within a sealed, SF6 insulated tank. SF6 is a nontoxic, nonflammable dielectric with excellent arc quenching properties. Contact position indicators clearly identify contact position. External switch operators can be padlocked for tamper-resistance. Electronic controls can automatically prohibit operation if the gas pressure falls below proper operating levels. The result is maximum operator safety.

Minimal maintenance — G&W SF6 puffer switches are factory filled, hermetically sealed and production tested according to applicable ANSI and IEC standards. Checking the pressure gauge is all that is required prior to operation.

Bushing flexibility — G&W offers a variety of bushing styles to accommodate specific user requirements. Bushing styles include porcelain, elastomeric and an exclusive porcelain over epoxy bushing with integral voltage sensor for automation or automatic transfer applications.

Compared to Air Break Switches
G&W SF6 switches can provide:
An economical alternative with superior performance.
Totally sealed contact systems eliminating environmental corrosion and icing concerns.
Significant increase in load break performance especially important in automation schemes where the number of switching operations typically increases.
Longer service life
Minimal maintenance
Ease of automation
